Broadcast Assignment Editor
Location: WXXV-TV Department: Newsroom Reports To: News Content Manager
Employment Type: Full-time Position Overview: The Broadcast Assignment Editor plays a key role in our fast-paced newsroom environment, overseeing the coordination and assignment of news coverage.
This position involves managing field reporters, photographers, and video journalists to ensure timely and accurate reporting of breaking news, stories, and live broadcasts. The Broadcast Assignment Editor works closely with producers, reporters, anchors, and the News Production Department to ensure stories are developed, edited, and delivered to meet broadcast deadlines. WXXV-TV is located in Gulfport, Mississippi, just a one-hour drive from New Orleans. Great beaches, gulf seafood and world-class casinos are just a few of the local amenities that make the Mississippi Gulf Coast a tourist destination and a great place to live.
Key Responsibilities:
• News Assignment: Assign news stories to field reporters, photographers, and other news team members based on priority, deadlines, and available resources.
• Breaking News Coverage: Respond to breaking news and coordinate coverage, ensuring crews are dispatched quickly and efficiently.
• Story Research: Research story leads, monitor news wires, social media, and local sources for breaking news or developing stories.
• Team Coordination: Liaise with reporters, producers, and camera crews to coordinate coverage for stories, including live shots and interviews.
• Monitoring News Events: Stay informed about local, national, and international news to anticipate and act on coverage needs.
• Managing Deadlines: Ensure all assigned news stories are completed within broadcast deadlines, and assist with troubleshooting issues related to live feeds, reporting, or coverage.
Communication: Maintain clear and consistent communication with team members, editors, and producers throughout the production cycle.
• Documentation: Keep track of story progress, locations, and assigned personnel, and update databases or tracking systems as required.
• Flexibility: Be available to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as news events dictate.
• Other Duties as Assigned: Take on any other responsibilities that support the smooth operation of the newsroom and production process.
Qualifications:
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
• Experience: Prior experience in a newsroom setting, ideally as an Assignment Editor, News Producer, Reporter, or similar role.
• Skills:
o Strong understanding of news coverage, production processes, and live broadcasting.
o Excellent communication and organizational skills.
o Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
o Familiarity with newsroom computer systems and editing software.
o Good judgment and decision-making skills for prioritizing news coverage.
o Ability to adapt quickly to breaking news and changing circumstances.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with digital media platforms and social media news gathering.
• The ideal candidate will have experience producing and reporting, or at least be willing to learn those skills.
• Knowledge of local, national, and international news trends.
• Familiarity with remote broadcast equipment and field coordination. Working Conditions:
• Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Some fieldwork or on-location assignments may be required.
• Occasional travel for news coverage may be necessary.
